Feet are the foundation of our body and they bear the weight of our entire body. Therefore, it’s not surprising that foot pain is a common problem. However, it can be difficult to know when to seek help from a podiatrist, a medical professional who specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of foot and ankle conditions.
What is a Podiatrist?
A podiatrist diagnoses and treats a variety of conditions that affect the feet, ankles and lower legs. This includes injuries, infections and conditions such as plantar fasciitis, flat feet, hammertoe, and corns and calluses. Podiatrists also provide routine foot care and prescribe and fit orthotic devices to alleviate pain and improve foot function. Additionally, podiatrists may perform surgical procedures to treat more serious conditions.
When To See One
Here are some cases when it would be in your best interest to schedule an appointment with a podiatrist:
- Chronic Foot Pain: If you have been experiencing foot pain for an extended period of time and it is not improving with self-care measures such as rest, ice and over-the-counter pain medication, it’s time to see a podiatrist. They will be able to determine the cause of your pain and recommend the appropriate treatment.
- Injuries: If you have suffered a foot or ankle injury, such as a sprain, strain or fracture, it’s important to see a podiatrist as soon as possible. They will be able to diagnose the injury, provide appropriate treatment and create a plan for recovery.
- Diabetic Foot Care: People with diabetes are at risk for a number of foot-related complications, such as neuropathy, infection and ulcers. If you have diabetes, it’s important to see a podiatrist regularly to monitor your feet and address any issues that arise.
- Nail or Skin Issues: Fungal infections, warts, corns, calluses and ingrown toenails can be uncomfortable and unsightly. A podiatrist can diagnose and treat these conditions, and can also provide advice on how to prevent them from recurring.
