If you have ever played sports, you have probably heard the terms “sprain” and “strain.” It is quite easy to confuse the two, especially since they share such similar names. The truth is that they are quite similar except for the fact that they involve different body parts. In the event of a sprain or strain on the field, Hampton Roads Orthopaedics Spine and Sports Medicine will help to treat the problem. Here’s what to look for:

What Is A Sprain?Rolled ankle

Sprains occur when a ligament stretches too far or even tears. When it comes to sports injuries, the ankle is the most common type of sprain, but they can also occur in the hands, knees, and wrists. The initial signs of a sprain include:

  • Pain around the joint
  • The inability to use the area normally
  • Bruising or swelling.

If you suspect a sprain, cover the injury with an ice pack and rest the area while elevating it. If the injury is extremely painful or continues to worsen, contact your doctor.

What Is A Strain?

On the other hand, a strain occurs when the muscle or tendon stretches or tears. In sports, common strains occur in the hamstring or lower back. Symptoms of strains are similar to those of sprains, but they also include muscle spasms and involuntary movements.

Your initial reaction to a strain should be quite similar to that of a sprain. Use ice, compression, and elevation to relax it.

When To See The Doctor

Mild sprains and strains may not require medical treatment, but some are quite severe and require medical intervention. See a doctor if you find it difficult to walk without extensive pain, are unable to move a joint at all, or begin to feel numb.
