Total body, or whole body MRI, is a preventative disease screening scan that gives a broad look at many major organs in one visit. It is designed to help identify certain health concerns early, and often can identify them before symptoms begin.

It’s important to note that this scan does not include the arms or legs. It focuses on the body’s major organs and spine.

  • Typically not covered by insurance when performed for screening
  • Payment is due at the time of scheduling

What Areas Are Included in the Scan?

Your total/whole body MRI screens the body from the top of the head through the pelvis, including:

Neck

  • Major soft tissues
  • Thyroid region overview
  • Lymph node assessment

Abdomen

  • Spleen
  • Kidneys
  • Adrenal Glands
  • Liver
  • Gallbladder

  • Pancreas

Pelvis

  • Bladder
  • Prostate or uterus/ovaries
  • Pelvic lymph nodes

Spine

  • Cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spine screening

Head

  • Brain tissue imaging includes high-resolution images of the brain, identifying potential tumors, cysts, white matter disease, and structural abnormalities.

What Is NOT Included

The total/whole body MRI covers the head to the pelvis, but it does NOT include:

  • Arms
  • Legs
  • Hands or feet
  • Detailed joint imaging
  • Dedicated heart or lung CT imaging

If you have symptoms in a specific area, your provider may recommend targeted imaging instead.

What This Scan Is Designed to Do

This exam is intended to:

  • Screen for certain tumors or masses
  • Identify some inflammatory or degenerative conditions
  • Detect selected vascular abnormalities
  • Provide a baseline look at your overall health

Important Limitations

  • Not a substitute for symptom-focused MRI
  • Does not replace mammograms, colonoscopy, or other routine screenings
  • May not detect very small abnormalities
  • Additional imaging may be recommended if something is seen

Total/Whole Body MRI Appointment & Scanner Use Policy

To ensure fair scheduling and availability for all patients, please review the following MRI policy:

  • Once a patient enters the MRI scanner, the appointment is considered in progress.

  • If a patient chooses to stop or cancel the exam after entering the scanner, a $300 scanner use fee will apply.

*Scan interruptions due to anything other than the patient will not incur a fee.

Total/Whole Body MRI Cancellation Policy

We understand that plans can change. For full-body MRI scans, please review our cancellation policy:

  • Appointments must be canceled at least 24 hours prior to the scheduled scan time to be eligible for a full refund.

  • Cancellations made less than 24 hours in advance are not eligible for a refund.

This policy helps us manage scheduling, staffing, and scanner availability for all patients.
