Total Hip Arthroplasty

Total Hip Arthroplasty, or Total Hip Replacement, is a surgery that replaces damaged hip bones and cartilage with new prosthetic parts to ease pain and improve function. Patients may have hip pain and discomfort due to arthritis, injury or hip disease. If the pain gets so severe that it limits everyday activities, and if it does not improve with medication or lifestyle changes, your doctor may recommend THA surgery.

Meet Dr. Carter

Dr. Carter joined Hampton Roads Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine in 1995. Here he introduced many firsts in the Hampton Roads area, including the direct anterior approach to total hip replacement as well as minimally invasive total knee replacement, both of which he has performed more cases than any other surgeon in the area.

He is constantly seeking new and innovative techniques. His expertise is widely recognized, lecturing both nationally and internationally and serving as a peer reviewer for journal articles. He is also recognized by his peers as a “Top Doc” of Hampton Roads. In addition, Dr. Carter most recently completed his first book chapter on total hip replacement!
