Tips to make social distancing more exciting (and healthy)Nations around the world have been affected by COVID-19, also known as Coronavirus. There is a constant supply of news updates on the situation, from social media headlines to official presidential announcements. Schools have been shut down, and most events have been canceled or postponed until further notice. There has been a big push for social distancing in order to “flatten the curve,” or reduce cases of Coronavirus. But just because shops and public places have shut down doesn’t mean we’re trapped in our room. This is a great time to stay active, enjoy yourself, and find renewal.

In this blog, we have some tips to help you stay active–among other things–throughout this pandemic. Let’s get started!

Stay Active

Maintaining good physical health can also help you fight off illnesses, including help prevent chronic diseases. There are many benefits to staying active during this time, including staying sane. But with social distancing, how are you supposed to do that?

Social distancing doesn’t mean solitary confinement. You can still go outside, so take advantage of that and go for a run in the spring air. If the weather isn’t so great, however, you can still exercise inside. There are many video workout programs available, as well as free YouTube videos you can exercise with. Love to dance? Commune with Nature

Being active doesn’t have to mean full-on sprints or deadlifting. Talking a nice, calm stroll through some nature trails is also beneficial. Walk around your block if the distance is an issue. When you are outside, however, do be careful to maintain proper social distancing–maintaining a distance of six feet from other people. Keeping your distance will protect you and others from potentially catching Coronavirus.

While taking it slow outside, take some time to appreciate nature’s beauty. Watch the birds as they flutter around, smell the freshly blooming flowers, and don’t forget to wave to the Johnson’s across the street. Do avoid contact–even if only close proximity–with others where you can, so plan your outings strategically so as to avoid times when there are more people out and about.

If you have a mind for it, yard work is another great activity during this time. Plant flowers or vegetables in your garden, cut the grass, trim the hedges, and do other things to help beautify your home and yard. Since you’re going to be spending a lot more time at home anyway, it might as well look nice!

Break Up Sitting Time

A lot of businesses have integrated a work-from-home policy, allowing many employees to still work. However–and just like at a regular office–it is important to break up your sitting time. Walk around the house while you’re on the phone, or set up a standing desk. It is also helpful to set a reminder on your phone or computer to remind you to get up and move.

Of course, there are other things you can do to stay active during this time. At Hampton Roads Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine, we want you to stay as healthy as you can. Visit us online to find one of our six convenient locations. Stay well!
