Summer is a time of outdoor activity and fun. While there is nothing wrong with wanting to enjoy the warm weather, there is a risk of summertime injuries stemming from many common summertime activities. Knowing which interests have the most risks and some basic tips on how to minimize them will help ensure that the rest of your summer can be enjoyed in a fun and safe manner.
Bicycle Injuries
Riding a bike is a popular summer activity. It is a great source of cardio and can be a very relaxing, enjoyable experience. Bike riding is also somewhat risky. Riding over uneven and unkempt roads and sidewalks can cause the rider to lose control and be flung off of their bike. In other cases, riders are unfortunately hit by negligent drivers and must contend with absorbing the shock of the impact. Injuries can range from something small like a bruise to a more serious problem like a concussion or broken bone. This makes it vital that the rider wears a helmet when biking. Wearing a helmet reduces the risk of injury by at least 48%, and more than that in more dangerous cases.
Swimming Injuries
Going for a swim to beat the heat is a classic activity. It brings risk, of course, but some basic precautions can help minimize these risks. The most common danger with swimming is drowning. Being a strong swimmer isn’t reason enough to venture into water that’s too deep. In addition, jumping into the water can also be troublesome if done incorrectly. Be sure to always jump feet first to avoid landing on your back or head. A break caused by landing painfully on the water may require physical therapy and rehabilitation.
Camping Injuries
Camping brings with it a unique set of challenges. First, when camping in a more remote area, be sure to bring more supplies than needed. This will ensure that you have a safety net in place should something go wrong. Hiking, rock climbing, and other activities done while camping can cause pain and injury. Adopt proper safety practices in all things, because if you get hurt while camping, it could be a long walk before you find help.
