Although warm summer weather seems to go hand-in-hand with easy-to-wear flip flops, these flimsy rubber sandals can cause an array of painful foot and joint issues. Their flat thin soles provide no shock absorption and lack arch support, and their tiny straps force the toes to grasp unnaturally in order to walk. Showing off a summer pedicure may come at a price; all that exposed skin increases the risk of scrapes, cuts, and the bendable soles can lead to tripping accidents. Continuous use can lead to plantar fasciitis, strained tendons, and balance issues. If flip flops become a regular part of your wardrobe, these issues can worsen and may include joint pain in the knees and hips as well as posture issues.
The Failings of Flip Flops
Flip flops strain our joints because they simply don’t complement the function of the human foot. They may be perfect for a trip to the pool or beach, but long-term use causes the wearer to alter their natural biomechanics—that is, the normal function and motion of the body changes. When you wear flip flops, your toes grip and your foot arches awkwardly, altering and shortening the walking gait. And because your feet are the foundation of your skeleton, this repeated unnatural motion can disturb the entire skeletal frame.
The fascia is the supportive connective tissue running along the underside of the foot from toes to heel. With their flat soles and lack of cushioned support, wearing flip flops causes constant strain and tension to the sole of the foot and can lead to plantar fasciitis. This condition is chronic and can cause shooting pains in the foot or even a heel spur. In some cases, long-term use of flip flops can lead to neuropathy or a lack of sensation in the feet. Those fun flips flops can lead to stubbed toes, torn nails, and painful scrapes, and although those injuries heal relatively quickly, more serious conditions, such as bunions and hammertoe, can also form.
There are fun alternatives to flip flops. Choose a cute, supportive sneaker for sight-seeing or walks, and an espadrille or other woven slip-on to wear with shorts and dresses! If you do prefer a strappy look, select a summer sandal with additional arch support, a shock-absorbing sole, and straps around the ankle. Your feet and your body will thank you!
