Hip pain can really put a damper on your daily activities. Even simple activities, such as grocery shopping and doing chores around the house, can be unpleasant. But when is hip pain serious, and when is it something you can handle at home?
If your hip pain is not too serious, then the following treatment methods are some things you can do at home to help alleviate the problem.
Non-Serious Hip Pain
According to the Mayo Clinic, there are a few things you can do at home to help with your hip pain:
- Rest: While you may not necessarily need to sleep it off, resting your hip is a good way to help any minor pain you may be experiencing. Avoid sitting for too long at one time. Also, avoid using your hip as much as possible. This includes bending or applying pressure to your hip.
- Pain Relievers: Over-the-counter pain relievers, such as Tylenol and Advil, can help lessen your hip pain. When taking this type of pain reliever, make sure you follow the directions on the bottle, and talk to your doctor first if you are taking any other medications.
- Heat and Ice: Apply cold treatment to your hip by using an ice pack or a bag of frozen vegetables. A hot shower or bath may also be beneficial, including loosening your hip for some stretches that could help.
When to See a Doctor
Chances are you will know something is seriously wrong with your hip simply because you are unable to do things you used to do. If you are unable to put weight on the affected leg–or if you can’t move it altogether–those are signs that you need professional help. Sudden swelling, intense pain, and any signs of infection (such as chills, fever, redness) also constitutes a trip to see a medical professional.
If you can tend your minor hip pain on your own, that’s great. However, sometimes you do need a bit more help than you can do on your own, and that’s where Hampton Roads Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine comes in. Our expert team will work with you to help solve your problems, big or small. If your hip is in need of a replacement, we can do that, too.
