direct anterior approach to hip Replacement Surgery at HROSMWhen a patient has arthritis of the hip, the underlying bone develops spurs and irregularities, which can result in pain and loss of motion. A total hip replacement has the ability to relieve pain and restore normal function in patients whose hip joint has been destroyed by trauma or disease.

Hampton Roads Orthopedics and Sports Medicine was the first in Virginia to offer the anterior approach to total hip replacement for our patients. This is a muscle-sparing minimally invasive orthopedic surgery that has gained widespread popularity over the years. The procedure is called direct anterior approach to hip replacement.

How it Works

This innovative approach allows our orthopaedic surgeons to remove the damaged hip joint by separating the muscles and ligaments instead of cutting through them.

Our physicians perform this procedure using the Hana Table, a specialized orthopaedic device that allows the leg to be turned and rotated, displaying the hip so that the surgeon has the most complete view of its structure. In many cases, only a single, small incision is required, and is less disturbing to tissue and to the hip capsule. This approach also offers less scarring and fewer restrictions during recovery. The surgery typically takes about 45 minutes.

What are patients are saying…

“The surgery went superbly, my pre-surgical preparation and care were excellent, and your management of my recovery in the hospital ensured that I had no pain and was able to walk and be discharged in only one day. Needless to say I am delighted with the outcome of my hip replacement, the staff at HROSM, and the overall care that was provided to me. Thank you again for making this a comfortable experience that has given me back the level of activity I enjoyed before the hip deteriorated.”
