Don’t Let Back Pain Control Your Life

In late June of 2022, Bob’s life shifted when he started experiencing severe, worrisome back pain. Initially, Bob tried to remedy the growing problem with chiropractic care, but after multiple adjustments, Bob saw no improvement.

Months passed, and after attempts for relief with more chiropractic treatment, Bob tried acupuncture and multiple prescriptions—but his back pain continued. Bob’s pain became excruciating. What started in his back began to travel down to his right leg and ankle, eventually making its way to the top of his right foot. After an X-ray, it was revealed that Bob had multiple pinched nerves and spinal stenosis.

Bob sought further medical attention and received two nerve blocks in hopes of success, but the pain continued to intensify and started to keep Bob from living his life. With the extreme discomfort, going out in public was a challenge. He and his wife, Millie, were no longer attending their regular social outings and even missed cherished time with their grandchildren.

“He just couldn’t be comfortable anymore,” Mille says. “He didn’t want to deal with his pain while out and about. Our social life was nil. Even our grandchildren didn’t come by because he wasn’t up to their visits.”

With options running out, Bob was then referred to Dr. Mark Kerner at Hampton Roads Orthopaedics Spine and Sports Medicine.

“We were referred to Dr. Kerner,” Millie says. “We were very excited to meet Dr. Kerner based on the many good things we had been hearing. Bob had tried everything at this point.”

After their first meeting with Dr. Kerner, Bob and Millie were hopeful and had complete confidence that he could restore Bob back to good health. In January 2023, Bob went in for a laminectomy procedure to treat his pinched nerves and spinal stenosis. The surgery was incredibly successful, and Bob finally experienced relief from the pain that controlled his life for eight months in just 48 hours. He and Millie are now back to enjoying their lives, going out to dinner and spending time with their loved ones. Thanks to Dr. Kerner and to the HROSM team, Bob has his life back—pain-free.

“We absolutely returned, within reason, to going out with friends as before the pain took control over his life,” Millie says. “His mood totally changed for the better. Dr. Kerner’s procedure improved his life by 150%.”
