Hampton Roads Orthopaedics Spine and Sports Medicine is proud to introduce Reginald W. Kapteyn, DO. 

Dr. Kapteyn joined our team as a doctor of osteopathic medicine. He is a highly accomplished, board certified physician specializing in sports medicine, pain management and minimally invasive procedures. He is passionate about restoring function and providing exceptional medical care to his patients. He aims to create a caring and compassionate environment for all his patients, and we are lucky to have him on our team!

Dr. Kapteyn HROSM

Education and Experience

Dr. Kapteyn received his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine from the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine in Lewisburg, WV, followed by a medical internship at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Michigan. Dr. Kapteyn then pursued his residency at Georgetown University and the National Rehabilitation Hospital in Washington D.C. He further honed his expertise through fellowship training in interventional pain at the University of Wisconsin, Madison.

From 2009 to 2013, Dr. Kapteyn served as the Medical Director of Pain Medicine at Drake Hospital, University of Cincinnati. He subsequently entered private practice with Orthopedic Associates Muskegon, where he worked until 2022. During his career, he also worked as a physician consultant with Hydrocision, contributing to the development of TenJet for minimally invasive tenotomies. Additionally, Dr. Kapteyn worked in hospice and palliative care with Harbor Hospice, worked in concierge medicine and served as a board member for NewAge Beverages.

Dr. Kapteyn has gained recognition for his skills in minimally invasive spine procedures such as spinal cord stimulation, kyphoplasty and radiofrequency ablation. He is also experienced in peripheral nerve stimulation, ultrasound-guided tenotomy and carpal tunnel release, Botox treatments, neuroelectrodiagnostic medicine and prolotherapy.

Throughout his career, Dr. Kapteyn has earned numerous honors and awards for his contributions to medical research. He has published various studies, including NIH research on neurophysiological correlates in chronic stroke patients. He also served as a lead investigator for the PUGET study, which examined the outcomes of tenotomies for medial and lateral epicondylitis. Furthermore, he participated in research on a novel migraine prophylactic treatment for chronic migraine headaches with Healthy Extracts, Inc. Dr. Kapteyn’s expertise and compassionate approach to care gained him a reputation of being a “physician’s physician,” as other physicians in the field often consult him for medical advice, guidance and treatment.

Outside the Office

A Grand Rapids, MI native, Dr. Kapteyn loves the warm weather and extensive outdoor activities the Hampton Roads area offers. He enjoys ballroom dancing, performing vocally, exercising, golfing, cooking, gardening and mountain biking. He has three college-aged daughters and was married to Nancy Kapteyn for 25 years until she passed away from breast cancer. In her memory, Dr. Kapteyn encourages contributions to the National Breast Cancer Foundation.
