COLD LASER THERAPY

Non-Surgical Laser Therapy in Hampton Roads

Hampton Roads Orthopaedics Spine & Sports Medicine is proud to offer cold laser therapy, also known as low-level laser therapy. This treatment promotes tissue repair, helps with pain and decreases inflammation. Administered over a series of sessions, it is a pain-free option that can be used on wounds that range in severity. This kind of laser therapy is rapidly growing in popularity due to its versatility—other uses include hair loss treatment and cosmetically improving the appearance of scars.

HOW DOES COLD LASER THERAPY WORK?

This therapy uses light to increase oxygen throughout the blood, which helps rejuvenate and heal the body. Wavelengths vary in intensity, but this particular kind of light therapy is able to reach the deepest layers of the skin. It is also quick, painless and does not require invasive surgery, making it an increasingly popular option for patients.

WHAT TO EXPECT

After helping you feel comfortable and making sure you understand the procedure, our wound care team will get started. We provide patients with eye protection to wear during treatment, as looking directly at a laser can damage the eyes. Unlike other therapies, you should not feel pain or even heat, although some patients report feeling the laser probe as it makes contact with the surface of the skin. With this type of laser, you will not hear any kind of sound or vibration as it moves over your skin. Though the duration of treatment is quick—lasting between five and twenty minutes—almost all patients require more than one visit.

DURATION OF TREATMENT WITHH COLD LASER THERAPY

The number and frequency of sessions depend on the severity and location of your wound, but most patients start noticing a difference between two to five treatments. Keep in mind that your provider may recommend twenty or more treatments to ensure proper healing and the best results. Since cold laser therapy works at a cellular level, it is important to follow through with all of your recommended treatments, even if you notice a considerable improvement in your wound in pain and appearance.
