Virginia Senior GamesHROSM is excited to sponsor the Virginia Senior Games hosted in Newport News kicking off Wednesday, May 18th and running through Saturday, May 21st. Over the course of the games, 18 different sports will be represented with over 1,000 participants.

The Senior Games began as the “Golden Olympics” in 1979. Back then, only three other states had a senior games program. Many sites around Virginia hosted this event including Lynchburg, Richmond, Blacksburg, Danville & Williamsburg. In time, the name changed from the Virginia Senior Games, to the Trigon Virginia Senior Games and back to the Virginia Senior Games. In 2002, the Games grew to 1000 participants and over 400 volunteers. The Virginia Senior Games program has provided a qualifying venue for the National Senior Games since 1987. Last year, 67 senior athletes represented the Commonwealth at the first national event in St. Louis and brought home 29 medals.

The program’s philosophy is to provide something for everyone. From swimming and tennis to cycling and track and field, events are chosen to include the non-physical as well as the physical. This ensures the accommodation of all skill levels and promotes an atmosphere of competition and entertainment. Social events, such as expos, dances and an ice cream reception are important headliners as well.

We wish everyone participating at the 36th Annual Virginia Senior Games the best of luck!
