We are proud to announce the addition of Dr. Zachary Tan, board certified and fellowship trained orthopaedic spine surgeon, to our practice. Dr. Tan specializes in minimally invasive muscle sparing spinal surgery and total joint replacement surgery. His fellowship training in spine surgery provides him expertise in the medical and surgical treatment of spine conditions, including but not limited to: lumbar disc herniations, lumbar spinal stenosis, cervical disc herniations, cervical stenosis, myelopathy, spinal instability/trauma, spinal deformity, adult, spinal infection, spinal tumors, and revision spinal operations. Beginning August 2nd, Dr. Tan will be one of our Orthopedic Spine Surgery Specialist, practicing in Newport News and Williamsburg.

Joining our growing practice of 13 physicians, Dr. Tan will focus on working with those having trouble with nerve related pain in the arms or the legs, degenerative problems of the spine resulting in nerve or spinal cord compression, as well as those  with back or neck pain secondary to deformity, infection, tumor or instability. “The most important facet of my practice would be compassion. Every patient and diagnosis is different and the treatments should be carefully tailored to each individual. My job is to correctly and timely identify the root of the problem and help patients understand their condition and navigate to the best treatment options available. The second facet would be to exhaust all conservative options, if appropriate. And lastly, if the shared decision is to go ahead with an operation, it is then my commitment to the patient to provide the best experience and the best technical result achievable,” states Tan.

Dr. Tan received his bachelor’s of science degree and his medical degree with special training in research from the University of Alberta. After completing his surgical residency training at the University of Toronto, he remained for an additional one-year fellowship in spine surgery focusing on the management of spine trauma, oncology, deformity, and degenerative diseases.

“The other specialist colleagues at HROSM are extremely collegial. There is a wealth of interdisciplinary expertise to help provide patients with the most holistic, well rounded care. Whether it is our interventional pain specialists or our physical therapists, I’ve always had the feeling that it is a very cohesive team with the singular purpose of providing the best care for our patients,” states Tan.
