What’s New in Adult Reconstruction?

Tissue-Sparing Direct Anterior Approach Total Hip Replacement

We are pleased to be the first in Virginia to offer the anterior approach total hip replacement to our patients. This procedure has gained widespread popularity because of the proven accelerated recovery time for patients. With this approach, the surgeon can avoid cutting specific muscles and tissues. Through the use of a special table, called the Hana table, physicians can maneuver the hip joint and leg into a more stable position. This approach also offers less scarring and fewer restrictions during recovery.

Hip Resurfacing: Preserving More of Your Natural Bone

More popular with our younger patients, hip resurfacing is a type of hip replacement that removes less bone than a traditional hip replacement but replaces the arthritic surfaces of the joint. This method of arthroplasty has been widely used in Europe, but is relatively new to the United States. It is more commonly performed on younger patients to prolong the need for replacement of the total hip joint as they grow older. Hip resurfacing is not recommended for patients with osteoporosis.

Reverse Total Shoulder Replacement: A New Approach for Challenging Patients

The reverse total shoulder replacement has been successful in restoring active overhead elevation and pain relief for many patients. It works by achieving complex biomechanical changes. In a nutshell, the operation alters the center of rotation of the shoulder joint, which decreases the likelihood that the new components will loosen and fail. It also allows the deltoid muscle to raise the arm. Patients with severe pain and dysfunction who are not good candidates for standard TSR or in whom that procedure has been unsuccessful, Reverse TSR may be able to offer significant improvement in comfort and function.
